Nightmare Material
USATODAY.com - Librarian’s brush with FBI shapes her view of the USA Patriot ActOur government has always possessed the power to obtain library records, but that power has been subject to safeguards. The Patriot Act eliminated those safeguards and made it impossible for people to ask a judge to rule whether the government needs the information it is after. In the current debate over extending or amending the Patriot Act, one of the key questions is whether a library or any other institution can seek an independent review of an order. Even the attorney general conceded in a recent oversight hearing that this is a problem with the law as written.

YourTotalSite.com / Simple Design Tips for Non-Designers
YourTotalSite.com / Simple Design Tips for Non-Designers
Web design is an interestingly unique skill. Due to its infancy, it is a career in which many professionals have very little formal training. Designers may not have training in programming and programmers rarely have training in design. As much as I understand and appreciate design, I’m more of a programmer at heart. My design skills aren’t very impressive. I’ve picked up a few little tricks over the past few months that I thought others more inclined to programming may find useful.

Happy Dance
Starting June 1st, yours’ truly will become the Electronic Services and Reference Librarian in the Volpe Library of Tennessee Tech.
I’m extremely excited about this, I was impressed with the way the library is a part of the campus and the community and how open they were to new ideas.

E-LIS RSS Feed
I’ve been using E-LIS for a while, but I didn’t realize that they had come out with a feed for the latest additions to their database.
It looks like a great resource. I would request a way to get a feed from a search though.

VoiceOver and Safari: Screen reading on the Mac | 456 Berea Street
The new Mac operating system has a screenreader built in. As Roger says, buying a Mac Mini is less than half of a Jaws license (good for cash-strapped libraries).

Broadcast Flag Waived
- Judge blocks Anti-Piracy Ruling at Forever Geek
Basically, there was a recent decision by the FCC to force all manufacturers of Televisions (and anything capable of receiving a TV signal.. that’s right computers too…) to install technology capable of interpreting a “broadcast flag” that would signify a program was not to be allowed to be recorded. This was scheduled to go into effect with all new entertainment devices capable of receiving such signals manufactured after June 1st of this year. To sum up the judge’s ruling, he basically said that the FCC did not have the authority to impose such a decision.
- librarian.net:ALA wins lawsuit over broadcast flag
The American Library Association, Electronic Frontier Foundation and friends just won their joint challenge to the FCCs weird Broadcast Flag regulations… Not only does this mean that the FCC has to back off from trying to require all digital video receivers to have special Digital Rights Management embedded … but the courts also agreed that the ALA, and by extention librarians and educators, had standing to file this case in the first place.

Library Marketing-Thinking Outside the Book: Freebies! (Did I get your attention?)
Library Marketing-Thinking Outside the Book: Freebies! (Did I get your attention?)
f you attend fairs and the like, you’ve no doubt noticed that those booths with the coolest freebies tend to get all of the attention. I’ve just begun doing more and more of these kinds of things and you can imagine my surprise when I showed up to my first event without so much as a customized pencil on my table. Needless to say, I had to be a little more, well, venturesome than normal to be noticed.
So now that I’ve learned my lesson, I’ve been looking around at some possible freebie purchases. I found a number of web sites that seem to have some good potential products that may be of use to you too…

Tallahassee library promotes new sense of community
Today’s library has changed, and the one-year-old Fort Braden branch is no exception. The branch sports a new gray and white exterior and the interior is designed for comfort, making it the place to stop by even if you’re not doing research. The librarians are now “information professionals ” and it’s likely the item you checked out can fit in your purse.
