creativelibrarian.com

The Creative Librarian is a hub for matters important to librarians/information scientists of today. There is a definite lean towards electronic issues, however it isn't restricted to only those. Hopefully this site will also be useful for informing non-librarians on these issues as so many of them affect us all.

Screencasting

I believe screencasting is a valuable and underused tool on library sites. Unfortunately, as Meredith notes, file size can be a problem, not only for those on dial-up but even those of us (like yours truly) who simply have no patience. By the time the video has downloaded, I’ve moved onto something else.

An alternative might be to post snippets next to the ever present “help” links just dealing with the immediate options. Patrons who wanted the whole walk-through could download it and watch at their leisure.

Of course, this triples the work-load. First the video, then the snippets, finally the text. But like have books in large-print and audio it might be duplication simply too valuable to do without.
