Web as Networking
The Shifted Librarian points to Jon who points to Hublog. And, by process of evolution, the topic of music recommendations turns into library information on the Internet. This is one of the reasons I love the web. Not only can you “listen in” to conversations that give you new ideas, by the process of linking, you can go back and see what inspired those ideas to get a better understanding of what the authors are talking about.
As for the idea of an active rèsumè
, I’ve observed this very process in the online web-design community. Person A starts a website which becomes popular, Person B notices and thinks of A when a project comes up and A gets the job. The library equivalent would be for users to think of Library C’s catalog instead of, say Amazon, when looking for a book. The fact that the library is useful in that one respect makes the users think of it for other uses as well. Since my library has started a simple outreach program of posting news to our homepage and posting tips to a public email list, we’ve seen interest grow exponentially from patrons who are pleased to find out all of the web-based services we offer.
